Mariachi Las Adelitas

Songlines Encounters 2023

Formed in London in 2013 this unique band was born out of the desire to shatter stereotypes within this traditionally male-dominated genre.

Mariachi Las Adelitas take their name from the ‘Adelitas’: brave Mexican women who took to arms in the Mexican revolution rebelling against the many injustices of the time.

This seven-piece band comprise members originally from Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, Italy and the UK, and were the first female mariachi band in Europe. They have been instrumental in bringing mariachi to audiences who would never usually experience this music, rejuvenating a dying art form.

Each member is a fantastic instrumentalist, and there are no less than three lead vocalists, all with the vocal power and clarity expected from any serious mariachi band.

The Mariachi classics are included in their repertoire, plus beautiful arrangements of well-known songs including classics in English arranged in an authentic mariachi style, adding a unique twist.

Cerys Mathews from BBC 6 Music is also a big fan. She interviewed them twice in 2022, once on her hugely popular Sunday show, and once for BBC radio 4 programme ‘Add to playlist’. She regularly plays their releases, the latest being in January 2023 on both hers and Steve Lamacq’s show.

The performance will last approximately 70 minutes.
