Gaza’s first female oud player, Reem Anbar emerged in the early 2000s, drawing on tarab traditions and Palestinian song heritage to forge her self-taught style. Before leaving Gaza in 2017, she appeared widely on TV, in concerts, and taught music in refugee camps. Now an international performer, she has brought her music to stages across three continents and to refugee camps in Lebanon. A member of Gazelleband and a solo artist, she continues to collaborate with leading musicians. After training with Egyptian maestros, she returns to Britain in 2025 for concerts and recordings.
Musician, writer and filmmaker Louis Brehony specializes in the buzuq, inspired by Syrian master Muhammad Abdel Karim and over two decades of Palestinian music research. His 2023 book Palestinian Music in Exile (AUC Press) traces histories of displacement through song, following his award-winning 2020 film Kofia: A Revolution Through Music. Widely published on Palestine, culture and politics, Louis joined Reem Anbar for Gazelleband’s 2023–24 world tour across eight countries. In 2025, he performed in Cairo and gave guest lectures on regional music and culture, continuing his fusion of scholarship, activism and performance.
‘Reem and Louis play beautiful Palestinian medleys. The chemistry between them and their respective instruments is what makes this special – they weave and dance and mesmerise, trading the lead.’ Tom Colquhoun
