Sound Unwrapped

Valentina Magaletti is a percussionist and composer whose explorative blend of ritualistic and eletronic motifs have earned her recognition in the contemporary musical landscape. Nigerian electronic musician and violist Ibukun Sunday joins the bill, bringing a uniquely bold and brightly coloured take on ambient music.

For this special performance, utilising d&b Soundscape, Valentina Magaletti will perform a dynamic solo improvised set fusing percussive explorations and electronic soundscapes.

Gaining prominence as part of acclaimed avant-pop group Vanishing Twin and improvisational duo Tomaga in the 2010s, Magaletti’s collaborative instinct and multi-instrumental skill have seen her record and perform with Raime, Nicolas Jaar, Charles Hayward, Graham Lewis, Thurston Moore, Bat for Lashes, Gruff Rhys and many more.

Her current projects include Moin and Holy Tongue, where free jazz, drone and percussive elements meet sound system frequencies to devastating effect.

Please be advised strobes will be in use for this event.

The performance will last approximately 90 minutes, including an interval.

About Ibukun Sunday:

Nigerian ambient musician and violist Ibukun Sunday binds ambient and West African musics with field recordings from his native Lagos.

Though the fuzzed-out elegance of his music can be compared to the work of Lawrence English, William Basinski or Tim Hecker, Ibukun’s core culture shines through in a pure and singular way. Already a favourite of Mary Anne Hobbs, his latest album Mantra was released on Phantom Limb in January 2023.
