Explosive, tender and wildly theatrical, this one-night celebration of ‘Album Z’ – the NMC Records debut from composer-performer Zoë Martlew – brings together an all-star line-up of internationally acclaimed solo artists. Expect a kaleidoscopic feast of blazing virtuosity, cosmic soundscapes and heart-stopping intimacy – a journey from earth to stars…

Blurring the lines between concert, theatre and ritual, Album Z marks the beginning of a bold new chapter for Zoë Martlew – composer, performer and creative catalyst whose music spans wild electronica, biting comedy, luminous stillness and profound emotional truth.

For this one-night-only event, Martlew is joined by an extraordinary line-up of internationally renowned soloists – close friends and long-time collaborators – in a joyous, unrepeatable meeting of artistry, humour and heart. Together they journey through vast worlds of sound and story: from ecstatic, interstellar realms to aching tenderness; from irreverent cabaret and blazing virtuosity to radiant quietude.

Harnessing the spectacular surround-sound system of Hall 2, the evening becomes a fully immersive experience — visceral, cinematic and deeply moving. Beneath its shimmer lies the deep humanity, wit and quiet transcendence that infuse all of Martlew’s work – the fruit of a rich creative life shared across concerts, collaborations and conversations around the world.

Album Z Live heralds a compelling new voice in British music – distinctive, daring and impossible to forget.

This event will last approximately 90 minutes, with no interval.

Zoë Martlew

Zoë Martlew composes music that moves between worlds — crystalline and raw, comic and sacred, intimate and vast. Her works weave ancient echoes with futuristic soundscapes, drawing on myth, language and archetype to create music that feels both timeless and vividly alive. Album Z (NMC Records) is her debut release as composer, gathering pieces that chart a lifelong journey through performance, ritual and fearless experiment.

Celebrated in the press as ‘dazzling, nuanced, beautifully constructed, deeply funny and electrifying,’ Martlew’s works have been performed at major festivals and venues worldwide including Aldeburgh, Huddersfield and Tanglewood Contemporary Music Festivals, Wigmore Hall and ISCM World Music Days, where she represented Britain. Her music has been championed by ensembles including London Sinfonietta, Riot Ensemble, Grossman Ensemble (Chicago), Marian Consort, Onyx Brass along with leading solo artists such as Claire Booth, Anna Dennis, James Gilchrist, Mark Padmore and the stellar performers in this concert.

Her path to composition has been many-layered. She has travelled the world as a cellist, cabaret artist, educator and presenter, immersed in contemporary music, improvisation, film, electronica, pop, rock, dance and theatre alongside regular appearances on BBC TV and radio.

Reviews

‘Martlew’s works have been drip-fed into the light of day; this reveals a voice that needs to be heard. We need fun, and we need depth. Rarely do these come at once these days; the piece is beautifully constructed and deeply funny’ Colin Clarke, Seen & Heard International

‘Music that rises to a plangent emotional peak’ Wall St. Journal

‘…laugh-out-loud funny piece of musical theatre. Here the vocal, breath and body sounds provide proper silliness’ Anne Templar, BBC Music Magazine

‘Not since Thomas Adès’ Powder Her Face have I heard anything so gleefully tawdry. Fabulous.’ Simon Cummings, 5against4
