Olivia Chaney

London-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Olivia Chaney follows up her 2015 Nonesuch debut, The Longest River, with Shelter, released earlier this year. The album was produced by Thomas Bartlett, who recently collaborated with Sufjan Stevens for the soundtrack to Call Me By Your Name and has also worked with an array of celebrated artists including David Byrne, St. Vincent, The National and Florence Welch. Shelter features eight original songs, along with Chaney’s interpretations of Henry Purcell’s O Solitude and Frank Harford and Tex Ritter’s Long Time Gone, first recorded by the Everly Brothers.

Last year Olivia featured on two collaborative albums:  the first – Folk Songs – with fellow Nonesuch artists; Natalie Merchant, Rhiannon Giddens, Sam Amidon and Kronos Quartet; and the second – The Queen of Hearts – an album by Offa Rex, a new band formed between Olivia and The Decemberists, which was nominated for a Grammy at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards in the ‘Best Folk Album’ category.

Please note that the performance starts at 8pm and will finish at 9.30pm. There will not be an interval.

‘As soon as Shelter begins, you fall into its warmly drawn, welcoming world.  Chaney’s voice is effortless, clear and bright.  The arrangements throughout are lovingly minimal.  The ghosts of Sandy Denny’s early 1970s solo albums are never very far away, but what gleaming ghosts those are to carry with you.’ Guardian, Folk Album of the Month

‘A finely wrought piece of work, with Chaney’s swooping delivery turning songs into dramas.  An elegant, luminous album.’ Observer

‘Guitar and piano notes plunge, deliberate and shimmering; the deep frank voice mixes Louise Goffin, Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush at her most luscious.  A big, beautiful record.’ Mojo
