As a kid Debashish Bhattacharya entered an all-India talent scholarship on Hawaiian guitar and, out of 300,000 competitors, won through to the final. However, he has disqualified because he played ‘a foreign instrument’. By building his own instruments he’s made the slide guitar thoroughly Indian and set up a successful school in Kolkata.

In conversation with Songlines Editor-in-Chief Simon Broughton, Debashish demonstrates the unique qualities of his slide guitars and explains why he needed to create them.
