EFG London Jazz Festival

COLECTIVA explores the spaces between Afro-Latin music and Jazz while reflecting on themes of sisterhood and female empowerment.

Blending wild horn lines with Afro-Latin groove and experimental textures, COLECTIVA’s thoughtful arrangements are rooted in the sounds of Africa, Latin America and the diaspora, creating a genre the group have affectionately dubbed jazz tropicaliente (hot-tropical-jazz).

After a triumphant year, selling out the Barbican and The Jazz Cafe, and performing several shows at SXSW (Texas, USA), they released their second single How Do You Like Your Ladies, on pioneering UK Jazz label Jazz re:freshed.

How Do You Like Your Ladies? is an anthemic-party-starter embodying female rage. Channelling their frustration at patriarchy and gender-based violence, COLECTIVA deliver a 3 minute instrumental, rich in Afro-Latin rhythm, fiery horn motifs, salsa influences, and jazz-inflected breaks. 100% of profits from the single will be donated to Sistah Space’s safe house campaign, which aims to raise £200,000 over the next four months to establish the UK’s first domestic abuse shelter for African and Caribbean heritage women.

Their debut single, Under The, written in collaboration with jazz pianist Maria Grapsa and released in April 2021, received huge global radio plays and DJ support from the likes of Huey Morgan and Jamz Supernova on 6 Music, Jazz FM’s Chris Philips and Tim Garcia, and Toshiro Matsuura and Papaoul on Worldwide FM, amongst many others.
