Elsie Franklin

IGF Guitar Summit

IGF Guitar Summit is back at Kings Place for three days of concerts, workshops, lectures and masterclasses with the world’s greatest guitarists.

Elsie Franklin is a musician based in York, playing and singing old-time style American folk, blues and ragtime. Elsie plays fingerstyle and slide on her trusty National resonator guitar. Originally from the south of England, she grew up listening to and learning to play American folk music through the influence of her father- highly acclaimed musician, Adam Franklin.

Primarily influenced by iconic pioneers of traditional blues music such as Memphis Minnie and Sister Rosetta Thorpe, Elsie is keen to continue women’s pivotal role in what has become a somewhat male-dominated genre. She is praised for her authentic, powerful and intricate style of finger-style guitar and singing by well-known proponents of the genre such as Dave Kelly and her friend and mentor, the late Steve James. Dave says: “Elsie Franklin is the most natural blues singer I’ve heard in years, her guitar playing is pretty damn good too, uncluttered and tasteful, she really understands the genre, she’s the whole package.”

The event will last approximately 45 minutes, without an interval.

Blues originated in the deep south of the United States the 1860s. It has developed into one of the most popular styles of music, played by a rich diversity of musicians and enjoyed by a wide audience of multiple cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Since the ‘British Blues’ boom of the 60s, London has been a great international centre for blues and today’s event celebrates this wonderful, ever developing music! Don’t miss this unique event!
