Irreversible Entanglements

EFG London Jazz Festival 2021

EFG London Jazz Festival and Kings Place are proud to present the biggest London headline show to date for Irreversible Entanglements, the liberation-oriented free jazz and spoken word collective formed by poet Camae Ayewa (aka Moor Mother), saxophonist Keir Neuringer, and bassist Luke Stewart.

Coming together in 2015 to perform at a Musicians Against Police Brutality event organised after the slaying of Akai Gurley by the NYPD, they later added trumpeter Aquiles Navarro and drummer Tcheser Holmes to record their startling self-titled debut album, released to critical acclaim by International Anthem Recording Co. in September 2017.

‘Irreversible Entanglements’ self-titled debut wakes the frozen body to move, the dead mind to react, the mute mouth to scream resistance’ NPR

In relentless bouts of inspired fire music the instrumentalists explore and elaborate compositional ideas drawn from their deep individual studies of free jazz improvisation, but the tone of each piece is driven decisively by Ayewa’s searing poetic narrations of Black trauma, survival and power.

The message is the undeniable essence of the music.

‘Ayewa’s words—which are furious, but delivered with seething rage rather than showy howls—add to the intensity until it’s almost too much to take. This album will make you clench your fists’ Stereogum

Irreversible Entanglements presented an outstanding stream show as part of last year’s EFG London Jazz Festival following the release of their powerful second album Who Sent You? via International Anthem and Don Giovanni Records.

In the year of Black Lives Matter their music could not be more vital and important.
