Experience a dynamic and thought-provoking performance where the interplay of percussion, poetry, and music delve into the intricate themes of borders, loneliness, and the urban landscape. Poet, MA.MOYO is accompanied by Wonky Logic (bass, percussion), Lorenz Okello-Osengor (keys), Harry Ling aka Mackwood (drums) and, And Is Phi (vocals) as The BORN::FREE. The first set will be a solo live premiere of MA.MOYO’s unreleased EP – Viva Voce Vol. 1; the second set will be a quintet performance with The BORN::FREE. Expect to be transported on a journey with this fusion of sound, music, and poetry.
Belinda Zhawi is a Zimbabwean literary & sound artist based in London, author of Small Inheritances (ignitionpress, 2018), & experiments with sound/text performance as MA.MOYO. Her work has been featured on various platforms including The White Review, NTS, Boiler Room & BBC Radio. She’s held residencies with Triangle-Asterides, Cove Park, Serpentine Galleries and ICA London. Belinda’s the co-founder of literary arts platform, BORN::FREE.
Wonky Logic is a talented musician and producer hailing from Leeds. Combining elements of soulful electronics and crunk beats, Wonky Logic creates a mesmerising blend of hip hop that defies convention. Drawing inspiration from his background as a jazz pianist, he infuses his compositions with intricate melodies, clever basslines, and unconventional rhythms. Wonky Logic’s music stands out for its distinctively human touch, even within the realm of electronic soundscapes. His compositions are filled with rich harmonies and a post-funk sensibility that captivates listeners and keeps them hooked from start to finish.
Lorenz Okello-Osengor is a producer, musician and sound designer; who from an early age has been interested in a vast pool of musical tastes and sonics. Bringing an eccentric and refined approach to the music they touch, while letting their multiple influences flow – Lorenz is highly trusted by their collaborators and within the community of the London Music Scene. They spend their time between the studio and stage to symbiotically bring together all the music-making stages. Their work has been featured on many platforms including the FIFA 21 Soundtrack.
Harry Ling aka Mackwood has shared the stage with or contributed to projects by Kokoroko, Yussef Dayes Col3trane, Nilüfer Yanya, ELIZA, and many more. He is also a core member of 11-piece ensemble Levitation Orchestra, featured at We Out Here, London Jazz Festival, Jazz á La Villette, Paris and Brainchild. After cutting experience with names like Chase & Status and Jordan Rakei, Harry has already carved out a versatile niche between his disciplines of drumming, production and songwriting, from Jazz to RnB and beyond.
And Is Phi is a multi-disciplinary artist from Norway and the Philippines now based in South East London. Andrea is far from new to the scene, having performed with Steamdown, Emma Jean Thackray, Hector Plimmer, Scrimshire, William Florelle and many more as a valuable and inspiring creative force within the South London music scene. And Is Phi’s first album is Double Pink.
The performance will last approximately 1 hour 50 minutes, with an interval.
