Inspired by the abstract expressionist period of one of the last century’s most revered visual artists, ten Latvian composers respond to the intensely moods and deep colours of paintings that Mark Rothko – whose own roots stem from a Latvian childhood – called ‘the soul status portrayals’.

A fine Latvian quintet led by drummer Maris Briezkalns responds to projected images of original paintings from Rothko’s final decades of extraordinary creativity, in music that invites the audience to experience something that appears hidden, invisible to the eye.
