‘We got a woman among us who isn’t afraid of the sound of her own voice…’ Ntozake Shang
Jeanne Lee (1939-2000), the extraordinary American jazz singer, poet, composer, activist, was a true original. Emerging from the Fluxus movement in the mid-1960s, she became one of the distinctive and genre-bending creative jazz artists in the field, extending vocal technique and transforming jazz song into multi-disciplinary performance. Working with Carla Bley, Anthony Braxton, Marion Brown, Archie Shepp and John Cage, she also wrote her own opera and jazz oratorio, A Prayer for Our Time.
Acclaimed vocalist, movement artist, composer and kindred spirit Elaine Mitchener presents this new Lee-inspired programme with a host of impressive collaborators.
