Walk the Yiddish East End – 11:00am

Vivi Lachs speaker

The Jewish Book Week 2026 fringe programme offers opportunities to enjoy guided tours, talks and workshops around some of London’s most important Jewish cultural sites and subjects.

Walk the Yiddish East End – 11:00am

Expert Vivi Lachs leads a walking tour of tradition and change through the East End of London.

Walk along the routes of the ‘urban sketch’ column of the Yiddish press from the 1890s to the 1950s, as it captures comic, incisive and cheeky encounters with daily life. From parading a new Torah scroll down Whitechapel Road to the chazer market in Goulston Street, expect some surprising histories and performed readings. Vivi Lachs will take you on an entertaining journey through local tradition and significant social change, tracing ideas and events that impacted the community.
