Directed by award-winning composer, arranger and trombonist Callum Au, this all-star 10-piece line-up includes members of the orchestra, complete with additional French horn, tuba and special guest vocalist.
This energetic, swinging set of songs is inspired by the music of Marty Paich and the Dektette, in a selection of tunes originally recorded by the great Mel Tormé in 1960 on the seminal album “Swings Shubert Alley”.
Featuring special guest vocalist Elijah Jeffery, whose distinctive voice brings another exciting dimension to this celebration of big band and jazz.
Founded in 2025 by Callum Au (Creative Director), Hannah Hutton (Producer), and Sam McShane (Artistic Director, Kings Place), the Orchestra was created to bring the powerful, immersive sound of the big band to the heart of a contemporary arts centre.
Join this trailblazing ensemble for a celebration of the Great American Songbook and our thriving London jazz scene.
Please note, this event is programmed and presented by Kings Place as part of King’s Cross Summer Sounds, a free festival taking place at Coal Drops Yard. See full festival information here.

Elijah Jeffery is a Hampshire-born jazz vocalist and songwriter, celebrated for his warm, evocative vocal style and enticing stage presence. Raised surrounded with music, Jeffery quickly fell in love with musical theatre, and the great jazz performers and composers of the 20th Century, citing Johnny Hartman and Mel Tormé as key influences.
A graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Jeffery has established himself as an up-and-coming artist, performing throughout the UK. As well as his own projects, he has collaborated with the likes of Claire Martin OBE, Alex Garnett, and big bands such as the Capital City Jazz Orchestra.
After discovering a passion for songwriting, Jeffery self-released his debut EP ‘One of Her Clowns’ in 2023. The EP blends Elijah’s love of jazz with soul, singer songwriter and folk sensibilities, weaving tales of love lost and found through “poetic and intelligent lyricism” (The Jazz Mann, 2024).
In 2025, Jeffery joined forces with acclaimed pianist Eddie Gripper, writing and releasing a duo album that “explores concepts of love and darkness in an enthralling and absorbing way” (All About Jazz).
The album’s release was celebrated with a 30-date tour across England and Wales, showcasing the pair’s signature “wit and warmth” (TheJazzMann).
