Historian Ilan Troen and NLI Head of Collections Raquel Ukeles discuss the challenges and ethical considerations of building The National Library of Israel’s Bearing Witness Archive.


The National Library of Israel’s Bearing Witness Archive is an ambitious initiative documenting the events of 7 October, 2023, and the war that followed, capturing the unprecedented scale of instant messaging, online coverage, vigils, rallies, and memorials. In conversation with Raquel Ukeles, NLI Head of Collections, renowned historian Ilan Troen explores the challenges and ethical considerations of building this essential archive, preserving these materials for future generations and creating a reliable, accessible resource that offers unparalleled insights into a pivotal moment in contemporary history.

This event will last approximately 1 hour, without an interval. 


About the speakers:

S. Ilan Troen is professor emeritus at Ben-Gurion University and Brandeis University, where he held the Stoll Chair in Israel Studies. He was founding director of the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies and the Ben-Gurion Research Institute for Israel and Zionism. Troen served as editor of Israel Studies for 26 years and president of the Association for Israel Studies (2015-17), receiving its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023. His latest book, Israel/Palestine in World Religions: Whose Promised Land (2024), was awarded the 2024 Bernard Lewis Prize.

Raquel Ukeles is Head of Collections of the Islam and Middle East collections of the National Library of Israel.

Kings Place is situated just a few minutes’ walk from King’s Cross and St Pancras stations, one of the most connected locations in London and now the biggest transport hub in Europe.

The Venue 
Our performance spaces are situated on the lower ground floor. Hall One, Hall Two and St Pancras are located in level -2, reached by stairs, escalator and lift from the ground floor entrance level.

Event Times 
Door times indicate auditorium entrance times only. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the Kings Place seating areas, gallery-level art, canal-side terrace, café, restaurant and bar throughout the day and evening.

  • Our events begin promptly at the advertised start time. Typically, there is no support unless otherwise stated.
  • We recommend arriving in good time before the performance. The Hall doors will open 30 minutes before the performance to allow time to take your seats, or to choose a space for standing shows.
  • Latecomers will be admitted at a suitable break in the performance where possible

Recently re-furbished and now open with a new look, the Green & Fortune Café is open for selected concerts. Serving hot and cold food and drinks, including sandwiches, salads, soup, stew and a pie of the day, alongside a choice of cakes made by the on-site bakery team.
