Chuka Umunna is Labour’s leading anti-brexiteer. As negotiations over the Brexit deal reach a climax Umunna will discuss why he is a fervent opponent and what he expects to happen next in the Brexit saga. He will also reflect on an already remarkable political career. As a supporter of Ed Miliband’s successful leadership bid in 2010, he is seen as moving towards a more ‘Blairite’ position and is regarded by some as a possible leader of a new political party.
Chuka Umunna was selected by Streatham Labour Party to be Labour’s parliamentary candidate in March 2008. He retained the seat for Labour at the May 2010 General Election, winning 43% of the vote and was re-elected for a third time at the 2017 General Election with a vote share of 68.5% of the vote. From 2011 – 2015 he was Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills and is currently Chair of Vote Leave Watch, All Party Parliamentary Group on Social Integration, and the All Party Parliamentary Group on EU Relations.
Steve Richards is an award-winning political commentator and broadcaster. He has written columns for the Guardian, Independent, New Statesman, Spectator and Times. He has presented BBC series on Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and David Cameron. His latest series for the BBC, Reflections on Leadership, took the form of six ad-libbed talks on modern Prime Ministers and is available on the BBC iPlayer.
