A rare opportunity to hear ‘Shuggie Bain’ and ‘Young Mungo’ author Douglas Stuart in conversation with Scotland Unwrapped Guest Curator, Jackie Kay CBE.


Douglas Stuart was born and raised in Glasgow. After graduating from the Royal College of Art, he moved to New York, where he began a career in fashion design. Shuggie Bain, his first novel, won the Booker Prize and both ‘Debut of the Year’ and ‘Book of the Year’ at the British Book Awards. It was also shortlisted for the US National Book Award for Fiction, among many other awards. His short stories have appeared in the New Yorker and his essay on gender, anxiety and class was published by Lit Hub. Douglas Stuart’s second novel, Young Mungo, was a Sunday Times no. 1  bestseller, and his work has been translated into 39 languages. Douglas lives in New York and spends as much time as he can in Glasgow.

Jackie Kay CBE is a guest curator for Scotland Unwrapped. She was born in Edinburgh. A poet, novelist and writer of short stories, she has enjoyed great acclaim for her work for both adults and children. Her novel, Trumpet, won the Guardian Fiction Prize. She has published three collections of stories with Picador, Why Don’t You Stop Talking, Wish I Was Here, and Reality, Reality; two poetry collections, Fiere and Bantam; and her memoir, Red Dust Road. From 2016-21 she was the third modern Makar, National Poet for Scotland. She is Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Salford.

This event will last approximately 70 minutes, without an interval.
