Platoon Presents... Earth Day Special: Stewart Copeland in conversation with Cerys Matthews

With guest appearances from The Listening Planet’s Martyn Stewart and pianist-composer Rosey Chan

Platoon Presents at Kings Place

Renowned composer Stewart Copeland joins Cerys Matthews in conversation to discuss the synergy between nature and music and the launch of his new album, Wild Concerto on the Platoon label. The evening will conclude with a live solo piano improvisation by Rosey Chan.

After rising to international stardom with the Police, Stewart Copeland largely rejected his pop music past to pursue a career as a composer, authoring a prolific series of film scores, operas, and ballets.

Stewart Copeland’s Wild Concerto combines sounds from the natural world – captured as field recordings by Martyn Stewart – with their more traditional orchestral counterparts to create an engaging and distinctive sound world where nature is the soloist. Rather than musically evoke the characteristics of the wildlife, Copeland – former drummer of The Police – allows their own songs and sounds to speak for themselves; none of the recordings are altered. Allowing nature to sing is becoming increasingly important – Martyn Stewart has been cataloguing species for 60 years and has seen first-hand the sharp decline in diversity and abundance. Throughout his career, naturalist Martyn Stewart has journeyed through forests, deserts, mountains and oceans with microphone in hand – not to capture noises, but to preserve the voices of the wild. This album will be released on Platoon on Earth Day – 22nd April.

Rosey Chan, pianist, contemporary composer, and founder of Sonic Apothecary, will conclude the evening with a solo piano improvisation, drawing inspiration from the natural world and the spirit of Earth Day. A frequent collaborator across disciplines, Chan’s work explores the intersection of music, wellness, and environmental consciousness. Her recent collaborations with The Listening Planet reflect a shared commitment to creating music inspired by the Earth’s natural soundscape. Rosey’s latest album, Sonic Earth (2025) – a collaboration with The Listening Planet’s Martyn Stewart – weaves rare natural history sounds with piano improvisations, offering a meditative reflection on the changing environment. This live performance offers a glimpse into the fragile beauty of the living world through sound.

Stewart Copeland’s Wild Concerto will be released on Platoon on 22 April.

This event will last approximately 75 minutes, without an interval.

This event was originally programmed as Stewart Copeland & Arash Safaian in Conversation. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Arash Safaian was no longer available.
