In this one-off celebration, Poet in the City brings together poets, artists and those connected with the late great Toni Morrison, to shed new light on Sula.
2023 marks 50 years since the publication of Toni Morrison’s pivotal work Sula. Through her rich themes and characteristic style – described by Ben Okri as taking the traumas experienced by her characters and… ‘blasting them out from the secret caverns of unknown lives, in a prose that is threaded and shafted with intelligence, wit, unpredictability, tough truth’ – Morrison paved a new way for Black feminist writers and literary thinkers.
In this one-off celebration, Poet in the City brings together poets, artists and those connected with the late great writer to shed new light on Sula. They will share reflections, experiences and perspectives through discussion, readings and innovative new performances– with a world-premiere commission by multidisciplinary artists Cecilia Morgan/CIL and Safiya Kamaria Kinshasa. Join us for an evening that centres craft and critique, highlighting the significance of Toni Morrison’s writing and legacy across generational lines.
