The Cracks Are How the Light Get In: Exploring Personal Stories

Supported by Spotify

London Podcast Festival 2021

Podcasters Ade Bamgbala and Dave Pickering think about ways to tell your story or support someone else to tell theirs.

We will use the podcasts that we make as case studies to discuss finding the light within the darkness, how to be comfortable about discomfort, dealing with difficult or tricky topics, strategies for creating empathy and other ideas around creating memoir and telling your true stories.

Ade Bamgbala previously worked for Google as the lead Digital Coach and subsequently taught 50,000+ individuals how to grow their business, careers or confidence, online. In 2018, he founded Blacticulate a platform that amplifies Black stories and positive actions, through podcast production and accredited workshops, for underrepresented communities. Ade is also a freelance podcast producer for BBC Sounds, BBC 1xtra, Sunday Times and University of Arts London. He was a Whickers Awards Finalist 2019; APA judge 2019; One World Media judge 2020; British Podcast Awards judge 2021.

Dave Pickering is a freelance podcaster and storyteller whose work has been featured on Radio 4, Radio 4 Extra, Cbeebies Radio, Resonance FM and Radio 5 Live and won a British Podcast Award in 2017. He hosted Spark London’s Hackney true storytelling Open Mic for 8 years. In 2020, he released the narrative podcast called Down to a sunless: memories of my dad which combined over 10 years of archive recordings and interviews, creative nonfiction pieces, and a series of interviews with scientists and academics. The series was part-funded by The British Podcast Awards and The Wellcome Trust and recommended by Miranda Sawyer in The Observer.
