Yael Dayan, daughter of the legendary Moshe Dayan, looks back at her extraordinary life as a fierce and eloquent activist and influential politician, in conversation with Janet Suzman.

While admitting with searing honesty to missing the vivacity of her youth, she remains engaged and engaging, continuing to speak out frankly for her beliefs.

Yael Dayan served as a member of the Israeli Knesset between 1992 and 2003, and from 2008 to 2013 was the chair of Tel Aviv city council. She was an officer in the Israel Defence Force and enjoyed a successful career as an author and newspaper columnist. She has published five novels, a memoir of the Six Day War, entitled Israel Journal: June 1967, and a biography of her father, Moshe Dayan – My Father, His Daughter.

Janet Suzman is one of the UK’s most distinguished actors. The pre-eminent American literary critic Harold Bloom has written, ‘Suzman’s Cleopatra is unmatched in my long years of attending performances here and in Great Britain’. She played the part for the RSC in 1973, much later directing Kim Cattrall in the role at both the Liverpool Playhouse and Chichester. She has performed in many other productions by Shakespeare, as well as others by Ibsen, Chekhov, Fugard, Harwood, Pinter et al. Working for Federico Fellini in E la Nave Va stands out as a highlight for her, as does The Draughtsman’s Contract. Suzman received an Academy Award Nomination for Nicholas and Alexandra and has won two Evening Standard Awards. A life-long involvement with South Africa, her birthplace, has never waned and she has been involved with many productions in and for that country.
