Chair | Sally Berkovic |
A teacher of contemporary halakhah and Talmud at Matan, Midreshet Torah V’Avodah and the Pardes Institute, Goldman Barash guides us through the rich tapestry of Jewish legal sources and historical contexts. Her insights make complex ideas accessible to the novice, and even more compelling to fluent text readers. Drawing from her book Uncovered, she examines the Jewish woman’s place within the diverse and dynamic mosaic of faith and practice.
This event will last approximately 1 hour, without an interval.
Rabbanit Nechama Barash teaches contemporary halakhah and Talmud at Matan, Midreshet Torah V’Avodah (MTVA), and the Pardes Institute in Jerusalem. She also lectures on sexuality and halakhah through the Eden Center, an Israeli organization dedicated to enabling all women to have a meaningful experience in the mikvah (ritual bath). Nechama moved to Israel in 1991 after graduating with a BA from Stern College. She holds a master’s degree in Talmud from Bar-Ilan University.
An epistolary romance brought Sally Berkovic to London after growing up in Melbourne and living in Jerusalem and New York. Her first book, Under My Hat, is social commentary-cum-memoir focussed on the challenges to Orthodoxy by the increased engagement of women in Talmud study, ritual life and religious leadership.. Her more recent book, Death Duties, is a personal account of her involvement on the Chevra Kadisha, the Jewish burial society, set against her own experiences of loss and mourning. Since 2009, she has been the CEO of the Rothschild Foundation Hanadiv Europe, a grant-making body supporting Jewish communities and cultural heritage institutions across Europe.
