Film Screening: Mariza and the Story of Fado

Songlines Encounters Festival 2019

‘It is clearly the best TV documentary on fado ever produced: well narrated, historically accurate, intelligent, captivating, stunningly beautiful and with lots of well-chosen music’. Rui Viera Nery (Fado Historian)

Before Gisela João’s concert in Hall One tonight, there’s a chance to watch the 2006 documentary Mariza and the Story of Fado. It profiles Portugal’s most famous fado singer, Mariza, but also tells the fascinating political story of the music which began in the working-class districts of Lisbon around 200 years ago, was appropriated by the fascist regime until its overthrow in 1975, and is enjoying a strong revival today with characters like Gisela João.

Running time: 60 minutes
