Internationally acclaimed and Grammy-winning all-female Bulgarian vocal ensemble The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices are famed for bringing a contemporary twist to traditional music, performing modern arrangements of traditional Bulgarian folk melodies.
Having been featured on albums by Kate Bush, Drake and Wyclef, their unique sound harks back to unique Bulgarian traditions, using techniques including diaphonic singing, modal scales and dissonant harmonies. They’ve performed in concert halls all over the world, and will wow LACF audiences with their spine-tingling sound and vocal prowess. We’re delighted to welcome them back to the stage after a break of twenty years.
Opening act: This evening’s concert will start with a performance from the London Youth Choir – the London A Cappella Festival’s official Youth Partner for 2019. They’ll perform a programme of mixed choral works by much-loved composers, showcasing some of their best young vocal talent.
‘[The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices] are still one of the music world’s great wonders.’ Rolling Stone Magazine
Formed in 1952, The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices were originally called the Bulgarian State Television Female Vocal Choir. However, after their infamous contribution to Marcel Cellier’s Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares project in 1997, they changed their name to The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices. They are now under the direction of Dora Histova. In 2018 they released a brand-new album with Australian singer and composer Lisa Gerrard, BooCheeMish.
The London Youth Choir provides children and young people across London with high-calibre singing tuition and performance opportunities. They have a mixture of girls, boys and senior choirs aged between 3 and 22.
