Jonathan Dean writes of the trials, tribulations, tragedies and successes of his grandfather and great grandfather as they fled persecution, comparing their struggles to those that beset today’s refugees. Tony Kushner explores Jewish refugee movements before, during and after the Holocaust, to place them in a longer history of forced migration from the 1880s to the present.

Jonathan Dean is senior writer for Sunday Times Culture section, regularly interviewing some of the world’s biggest stars. He has also contributed pieces to the Sunday Times News Review, Style and Travel sections, writing on subjects ranging from Remembrance Day to racism in the Oscar nominations. He has contributed to the Pool, GQ, Shortlist, the Independent and Red.

Tony Kushner is Marcus Sieff Professor of the History of Jewish/non-Jewish Relations at the University of Southampton and Director of the Parkes Institute. Under his direction the Institute has become one of the largest centres for Jewish Studies in Europe. He is the author of eight monographs, co-editor of the journal Patterns of Prejudice and deputy editor of Jewish Culture and History.

Keren David is an experienced journalist, features editor of the JC and a highly-regarded YA author. Her first book, When I was Joe, told the story of a boy in witness protection, and eventually turned into a trilogy with the publication of Almost True and Another Life.
