In a programme directed by David Watkin, soprano Julia Doyle joins soloists from the OAE Experience and baroque cellist Alison McGillivray to explore the role of the continuo in sacred and secular music.
Discover how the cello is not only fundamental, but an equal partner in the drama of these arias and chorales, reflecting on and helping to articulate the text’s meaning. The Lutheran hymn was at the heart of much of Bach’s music. He arranged chorales as preludes for organ, weaving the melody through the music. This time we’ll hear the Schubler set in their original versions for voices with continuo, alongside Cantata 199, chosen for the richness of the cello’s interactions with voice. Plus arias from Giulio Cesare and Purcell’s Fairy Queen.
