‘Here is an antidote to identikit Beethoven… refreshing in its directness and honesty, he is a highly persuasive Beethovenian.’ Gramophone

For François-Frédéric Guy, one of France’s greatest Beethovenians, the sonatas are ‘a permanent feast… Ageless, unclassifiable music, which defies its own archetypes.’

A veteran of complete sonata cycles, he has chosen in this programme works from three different periods of the composer’s creative life: beginning with the wild elegance of his first sonata, dedicated to Haydn, through the wit and beauty of the Pastoral and ending with the mighty Hammerklavier, where time is suspended, tangled and reconstructed in a sustained miracle of composition.
