‘Immaculate and spirited…The playing is intense and refined, exploratory and poised. The sound is featherweight, but there is grit and substance when needed…’ The Guardian
Led by Alina Ibragimova, the Chiaroscuro Quartet is revered as one of Europe’s leading period instrument ensembles today. In this concert, they open with the dramatic first of Haydn’s six ‘Russian’ quartets, Op. 33, written in 1791.
Of the profoundly beautiful, heart-searching ‘Cavatina’ of his Op. 130 quartet, Beethoven was reported to have said that even recalling it ‘always cost him new tears’, and that it made a greater impression on him than any other of his works. The Chiaroscuro will perform the ‘alternative’ ending, a vivacious celebration of life’s simple gifts.
