Chromatica Orchestra is an ensemble of early-career musicians collaborating with exceptional emerging conductors and inspirational soloists to create extraordinary musical experiences. For this concert they are joined by Tess Jackson, a Classic FM Rising Star and Associate Conductor of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and soloists Charlotte Saluste-Bridoux and Leo Appel for Bach’s Double Violin Concerto.

The programme opens with Elegy for Strings, quiet and reflective elegy from Welsh composer Grace Williams, whose music was infused with the sounds of her homeland and her deep connection to the sea.

The interplay between the soloists in Bach’s Double Violin Concerto is like listening in on a conversation between two old friends. It moves from spirited and joyful conversation in the first movement, to poignant reminiscence in the extraordinarily beautiful second movement and finally good-natured teasing in the sometimes frenzied, but always playful, cat and mouse chase of the third movement.

Purcell’s Fantasias are a swan song for the viol consort, which was fast falling out of fashion when the composer wrote this music. Written as music to be played amongst friends, these short, free-flowing pieces revel in crunchy dissonances, hauntingly beautiful melodies and interludes of joviality.

Arranged by Chromatica Orchestra’s Founding Artistic Director Peter Manning Time Past, Time Present, Time Future is formed from the slow movements of Michael Tippet’s first three string quartets. The piece is filled with the bold, lush harmonies and expansive melodies that were the trademark of this composer, who used his music to communicate his deeply humanistic view of the world.

This event will last approximately 90 minutes, with no interval.
