Deep Listening with Daniel Pioro and Erland Cooper

Earth Unwrapped

Daniel Pioro violin

Violinist Daniel Pioro and composer Erland Cooper present a sonic meditation, allowing audiences to tap into their conscious and unconscious listening instincts.

Deep Listening, as developed by American composer Pauline Oliveros, explores the difference between the involuntary nature of hearing and the conscious nature of listening. In this collaborative performer/audience session, violinist Daniel Pioro and composer Erland Cooper invite you to join them in two sonic meditations to begin the second day of our weekend festival, Time Unravelling Sound Unfolding. The first meditation is by Oliveros and is taken from her 1974 book sonic meditations, and the second is a new one, born of Pioro and Cooper’s conversations after looking out over the canal together.

The artists invite you to come and join them in these meditations without any preconceptions and with open hearts.

Environmental Dialogue

Each person finds a place to be, either near to or distant from the others, either indoors or out-of-doors. Begin the meditation by observing your own breathing. As you become aware of sounds from the environment, gradually begin to reinforce the pitch of the sound source. Reinforce either vocally, mentally or with an instrument. If you lose touch with the source, wait quietly for another. Reinforce means to strengthen or sustain. If the pitch of the sound source is out of your range, then reinforce it mentally. – Pauline Oliveros

Environmental Sound

Find a room with a window and turn to face it. What sounds can you see or imagine? Reinforce that sound first in your head until it transitions into your body. Do you still see or imagine that sound? If so, reinforce either vocally, mentally, or with an instrument. If the moment has passed, look for a new sound.
Listen with your eyes, not with your ears. – Daniel Pioro and Erland Cooper

‘Music is a welcome by-product of this activity.’ – Pauline Oliveros

Supported by Cockayne Grants for the Arts, a Donor Advised Fund, held at The Prism Charitable Trust.

This event will last approximately 1 hour, without an interval.
