Martinů’s passionate Variations on a Slovak theme, written in his final year, 1959, is followed by Shostakovich’s mighty Cello Sonata, composed in Russia in the dark days of 1934. Dvořák beautiful Silent Woods then precedes one of the most famous Romantic works in the cello repertoire, Rachmaninov’s melodic and majestic Cello Sonata, composed at the dawn of the 20th century in 1901.
