Three songs portraying the moon’s allure formed the starting point for this programme: Lili Boulanger’s Reflets, Howard Swanson’s Night Song, and Benjamin Britten’s Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo: Sonetto XXX. The sonatas of Debussy, Britten and George Walker speak to the same ideas that the songs explore, encouraging the listener to dream up their own night imagery.
Beethoven’s delightful Bei Männern, Welche Liebe Fühlen bridges the gap between these two worlds of music – the ‘absolute’ and the sung.
