Opening with Mozart’s dramatic Adagio and Fugue, the Brodsky Quartet also introduces the UK premiere of Isidora Žebeljan’s sumptuous Dark Velvet, inspired by Mahler. The new works by Joseph Phibbs, celebrating the composer’s 50th birthday, are commissioned by Mark van de Wiel and Jouko Heikura. They follow a highly successful collaboration on Phibbs’ Clarinet Concerto of 2017, premiered with the Philharmonia, featuring ‘the breathtaking musicianship and virtuosity of the soloist, Mark van de Wiel. What Phibbs is able to conjure throughout the work is enormously impressive.’ (Classical Source 2018)
