WEBER, Carl Maria Friedrich Ernst, Freiherr von | Invitation to the Dance, Op. 65 |
---|---|
Ravel | Valses nobles et sentimentales (1911) |
Kevin Volans | L’Africaine (World Premiere) |
Ravel | Miroirs (1904–5) |
‘This programme shows Ravel’s fascination with things past, and juxtaposes the original idea, in this case the Valses nobles et sentimentales with Weber’s Invitation to the Dance both lending their homage to the elegance of the Waltz. These pieces are paired with Ravel’s evocative set of five pieces Miroirs; like painterly strokes of a Master, Ravel gives us a musical journey of fluttering insects in the night, a liner at sea with crashing waves, a call to the arid landscape of Spain, and distant bells pealing and echoing in the valley. In between these set of pieces is another call, to Africa, where Kevin Volans premiere of his piece L’Africaine will spike the listener with vigorous rhythms and chants from the Continent.’
– Melvyn Tan, February 2017
‘Despite the diverse compositional styles, each piece easily flows from one to the next, abetted by Melvyn Tan’s mellifluous and caring interpretations. A most enjoyable, enchanting 22 minutes of music, well worth downloading.’ Gramophone magazine
