Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment – Discovering Brain Dynamics of Music

Bach, the Universe & Everything

JS Bach Cantata, Gleich wie Der Regen BWV 18

With Professor Morten L. Kringelbach, Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow, Department of Psychiatry, University of Oxford speaker

The Music:
This cantata has a dark-hued flavour due to its unusual instrumentation which includes four violas. It opens with a musical depiction of rain and falling snow, and the lurking devil is evoked in the dramatic prayer ‘My soul’s treasure is God’s word’.

The Science:
How does music communicate meaning, and how does the brain process its patterns? The neuroscience of music is beginning to elucidate how music contributes to the experience of Eudaimonia, a life well-lived.
