Richard Tunnicliffe | viola da gamba, cello, cello piccolo |
---|---|
Steven Devine | harpsichord |
The viola da gamba is not, as is often assumed, an early version of the cello. Both instruments were born intotwo entirely separate families in the 15th century, one derived from the guitar, the other from the violin. The subtle viol was loved by Louis XIV and Charles I, but the robust cello, preferred by the Italians.
Join Richard Tunnicliffe and Steven Devine, in a programme which maps the curious and wary dance these two instruments made, as they jostled for pre-eminence.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Richard Boothby can no longer perform this evening. The harpsichordist Steven Devine has kindly stepped in. Please note that they will perform a slightly altered programme. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
