Sheku Kanneh-Mason shot to fame in May 2016 when he won BBC Young Musician with a riveting performance of Shostakovich’s first cello concerto.
Still a pupil at Nottingham’s Trinity Catholic School, he studies at the Royal Academy of Music and is a member of the Chineke! Orchestra. His pianist sister, Isata Kanneh-Mason, joins him for this special recital, in which he combines the cellist-composer Cassadó’s colourful solo suite with Beethoven’s darkly tempestuous second sonata, ending with Shostakovich’s epic masterpiece from 1934.
‘A musician of extraordinary charisma and depth’ The Artsdesk
‘Whether impassioned or fragile, Kanneh-Mason made the Concerto his own. The intensity of the cadenza communicated this cellist’s innate musical intelligence.’ Classical Source
