Eight poems written by Welsh poet Hywel John have been set into seven songs by English composer Richard Eteson and are presented as a new song cycle for the first time in this world premiere performance given by acclaimed Countertenor James Hall and accompanist Dylan Perez.
One stormy day in 2018 a single ray of sunlight broke through the dark clouds over the Preseli Hills on the West Wales coast. It landed like a spotlight on a single hawthorn tree that seemed to spring impossibly from an ancient island of stones in the midst of a small marshy valley. Ever since, this unique place has been a constant source of solace and inspiration to writer Hywel John. Together with songwriter Richard Eteson, the poems from Under the Hawthorn Tree have become a cycle that captures the essence of this mysterious landscape in new dimensions of song, sound and spoken word.
