Poet in the City Presents: Anthony Joseph – The Frequency of Magic

British-Trinidadian poet, novelist, musician and academic Anthony Joseph is widely coined as the leader of the black avant-garde in Britain. Join this multi-faceted artist as he turns the volume up to the frequency of magic in his new musically highlighted spoken word performance.

Playing on his inherent rhythmicity, Joseph draws on elements of jazz and Caribbean speech and music to deliver his pulsating story of an author writing a novel in which the characters have found a way to escape the rigid confinements of the text. Joseph’s words will ignite against a vibrant soundscape created by award-winning multi-instrumentalist Jason Yarde, who will be accompanying Joseph live.

Due for publication in 2019 by Peepal Tree Press, The Frequency of Magic is an epic, original work of poetic prose by one of the UK’s most influential Black-British writers of the last 50 years.

Anthony Joseph is a poet, novelist, musician and academic. He is the author of four poetry collections, and a novel, The African Origins of UFOs. As a musician, he has released six critically acclaimed albums. His seventh, People of the Sun, is due for release in summer 2018, alongside his second novel, Kitch, a biography of calypso icon Lord Kitchener.

Composer, arranger, producer, musical director and saxophonist Jason Yarde creates music that has been described as powerful, spiritual and formidable. His potential and originality has been rewarded with nominations for the Bird Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Jazz on 3 Innovation Award for the BBC Jazz Awards, the inaugural prize for Contemporary Jazz Composition at the British Composer Awards and a prestigious Paul Hamlyn Award for Composers.
