In the first of an occasional new series Jez Nelson and Chris Phillips invite their favourite contemporary artists to pay tribute to some of the lesser celebrated heroes of jazz. For the first show Hexagonal play the music of Bheki Mseleku and McCoy Tyner, Rob Luft leads a tribute to Grant Green and legendary bassist Dave Green plays Oscar Pettiford and Jimmy Blanton.

Hexagonal features Jason Yarde on alto sax, Greg Heath on tenor sax/flute, Graham Flowers on trumpet, John Donaldson on piano, Simon Thorpe on bass and Tristan Banks on drums.

Rob Luft’s Grant Green band will include Jonny Mansfield on vibes, Tim Giles on drums and Tom Herbert on bass.

In a career spanning more than 50 years, London-based bass player David Green has worked and recorded with numerous groups in all styles of jazz. His Jimmy Blanton inspired playing has accompanied names such as Don Rendell Quintet, Coleman Hawkins, Benny Carter, Sonny Rollins and Nikki Iles.

Guitarist Rob Luft originally formed his Grant Green tribute project, The Nomads, back in 2017, when East London music venue Brilliant Corners asked him to reinterpret Green’s seminal album Idle Moments. Since then, Luft has plundered the legendary guitarist’s wide-ranging Blue Note discography & handpicked a selection of his favourite compositions  specifically for this special edition of Jazz in the Round.
