Éthiopiques – Revolt of the Soul is a superb documentary directed by Maciek Bochniak which tells how Francis Falseto – creator of the Éthiopiques series of records – became obsessed with the country’s music, and how politics got in the way.
He discovers the key characters like record producer Amha Eshete, singer Mahmoud Ahmed and Girma Bèyènè, veteran singer and pianist, who finally returns to the stage and features in the 30th release of the Éthiopiques series. It’s a fascinating story and perfectly sets the context for Girma Bèyènè’s show in Hall One tonight.
