JS Bach Cantata 82 ‘Ich habe genug'
Joseph Haydn Symphony No. 45 Farewell
John McCabe was commissioned in 1991 to write a piece for the Istanbul Festival. The idea occurred during a journey through New England in the autumn when the leaves were particularly beautiful. The opening theme recalls the style of the American composers, Copland and Barber and the chromaticism and harmonies invoke the European tradition of Delius.
This Bach Cantata is one of his most beautiful and was written for the Feast of the Purification and contains one of the composer's most famous and haunting arias, ‘Sclummert ein, ihr matten augen' (Fall asleep you weary eyes).
The Farewell symphony of Haydn has an original and unique idea in the last movement; the players drop out of the music one by one until at the end only one first violin is left playing.
