Shani Rhys James: The Rivalry of Flowers

Matt West - Jazz Recital
Matt West studied jazz guitar with Charlie Mason in Wales. He is influenced by the music of Chick Corea and Joe Pass. He composes and teaches guitar in North Wales. His recital will include jazz and bossa nova with arrangements from Coltrane, Ellington, Joe Henderson, Courtney Pine and original compositions.
This exhibition deals with obsessive interiors and anarchic flowers used as a metaphor for the sublimation of female creativity in status furnishings and decoration.
Rhys James says “there is something dark and wild and crazy about flowers, yet in wallpaper designs they are controlled in a pattern and prettified. In our culture women are also prettified – she is part of the floral background, part of the furniture in a way. She has become just another decorative interior thing.”
The artist's work refers to the obsessive acquisition of objects - a displacement activity to create the illusion of permanence - masking a sense of loss and a feeling of rootlessness.
Shani Rhys James has won many prestigious awards for painting, including the Jerwood Painting Prize 2003, The Gold medal at the National Eisteddfod 1992 and was awarded an MBE for services to Welsh art 2006.
Her work is featured in many public collections and her new paintings on a large scale will be shown at Kings Place Gallery, London.

Simply in terms of her command of the medium of oil paint, whether worked on the tiniest or the largest scale, she is remarkable at once for the richness of the surface she achieves by it, and for the deceptive ease and assurance in her handling of it. She is a natural, unforced, unself-conscious expressionist. Immediately recognisable as entirely her own, her work is nevertheless devoid of all affectation or mannerism, while yet manifesting, it must be said, all the energy and enthusiasm of an artist half her age." - William Packer
