London Piano Festival Fundraising Gala

Charles Owen & Katya Apekisheva | Bill Laurance

The London Piano Festival celebrates its fifth year with a unique Fundraising Gala in aid of the 2021 edition. The evening will include two concerts in Hall One combined with a special guest reception.

Since its inception in 2016, the London Piano Festival has brought together a wide range of exceptional pianists to showcase this most versatile and popular of instruments. Circumstances sadly halted such collaborations, but the spirit of the festival promises to remain ever present.

This is a socially-distanced evening for 100 audience members. Click here to view our Coronavirus Advice page for some essential safety information about your visit.

OPENING RECITAL BY KATYA APEKISHEVA & CHARLES OWEN

The LPF Artistic Directors open this gala concert with captivating solo works by two of the most iconic of all 19th-century piano composers; Chopin and Liszt. Katya Apekisheva chooses pairs of Chopin’s Nocturnes & Waltzes to reveal their lyrical and dance-like qualities. Charles Owen focuses on Liszt’s Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude, a profound meditation on spirituality, beauty and peace. While the pianos are cleaned, the duo are then joined on stage by revered pianist and LPF Patron Imogen Cooper for a brief interlude of music and informal conversation.

To end the first half, Charles and Katya share the stage to perform Stravinsky’s ground-breaking, seminal ballet score, The Rite of Spring, in the composer’s own transcription for two pianos. This fascinating version reveals extra dimensions to the familiar masterpiece making it a thrilling, visceral concert experience.

JAZZ WITH BILL LAURANCE

Following an exclusive waterfront reception upstairs in Battlebridge Room by the Regent’s Canal, the second concert will feature the acclaimed jazz pianist, keyboardist and composer Bill Laurance performing his own music which evokes a striking sense of time and place. As an original member of multi-Grammy Award-winning, globetrotting, genre-defying group Snarky Puppy, Laurance has toured numerous times, playing to tens of thousands of fans worldwide. He is also a champion of cutting-edge keyboard developments and an inveterate inspirer and educator.
