EVENT DESCRIPTION

Showcasing the extraordinary versatility of Kings Place’s Resident Orchestra, Aurora Orchestra’s scintillating programme includes a symphony performed entirely from memory, a work of orchestral theatre from the incomparable imagination of Harrison Birtwistle, and a collaboration with rising star pianist Yeol Eum Son – known for her thoughtful interpretations of Mozart.

Yeol Eum Son performs Mozart’s A major concerto K488, written in 1786 alongside The Marriage of Figaro during the most productive period of the composer’s professional life. The concerto is paired with a rare opportunity to experience Birtwistle’s Cortege for 14 players, a virtuosic work in which musicians take turns to deliver a solo line from the centre of the ensemble, creating a kind of ritualised dance.

In the second half of the concert, Aurora presents Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, the Pastoral in one of its distinctive memorised performances of a whole symphony, an electrifyingly communicative approach which has become one of the most talked-about innovations in orchestral performance practice in recent years.

Due to her forthcoming maternity leave, Ingrid Fliter regrets she must cancel her appearance with Aurora Orchestra. However, we are thrilled to announce rising star pianist Yeol Eum Son will replace her and return to Kings Place for another memorable performance.
