SCHUBERT/WEBERN/RICCARDO PES Du bist die Ruh
SCHUBERT/WEBERN/RICCARDO PES Die Liebe hat gelogen
JS BACH ‘Geduld! Geduld!’ from the St Matthew’s Passion
JS BACH Cello Suite No. 1 in G, BWV1007

The programme starts with an arrangement of three of the lieder in the main programme, linked contrastingly with the Second Viennese School of Webern’s Three Little Pieces for Cello and Piano. Each arrangement ends with a musical comment composed by Riccardo and based on the original material. Mendelssohn conducted Bach’s St Matthew Passion in 1829 to great acclaim, effectively ushering in the Bach-Renaissance. ‘Geduld! Geduld!’ is a transcription of the famous Aria and Recitativo from St Matthew Passion. Mendelssohn often paid tribute to Bach, and so the programme closes with one of his most iconic works for cello solo.
