Lawrence Power’s eloquent artistry has inspired a multitude of composers, including Mark-Antony Turnage: Powerplay is a virtuosic dance suite underpinned by Baroque forms, as are Shostakovich’s mordant character pieces, arranged from his 24 Preludes.
Falla’s 7 Popular Spanish Songs encapsulate the fiery passion of folk music from all over Spain, from flamenco dance in the south to a mesmerising lament from Asturias. In the second half, Shakespearean tragedy claims the stage: Berlioz’s Death of Ophelia and Prokofiev’s indelible Romeo and Juliet.
