Antonin Dvořák wrote the American Quartet, also his 12th, in 1893, and you can literally hear the chug of the railways, the native birds that fascinated (and disturbed!) Dvořák , and his brilliant use of uplifting pentatonic folksong. Incredibly, Franz Schubert’s unfinished quartet, the one movement Quartettsatz, was already his 12th quartet in his short life. Written in 1820, after an enigmatic yet dramatic beginning, the clouds part to reveal the sweetest of melodies from this lyrical master.
The performance will last approximately 1 hour, without an interval.
