The celebrated Rosamunde Trio presents a programme to mark the Armistice centenary. Music that takes us back to World War I is balanced with more transcendent music of beauty and hope. Lili Boulanger’s elegiac trio from 1917-18 acts as a prelude to Shostakovich’s powerful trio, written in the midst of the World War II and completed in 1944. Pianists Martino Tirimo and Atsuko Kawakami play Casella’s Pages of War – a short but dramatic work dating from 1915.
FREE Pre-Concert Foyer Performance – Salomé Quartet, 5.45pm
Salomé Quartet perform Edvard Grieg’s epic String Quartet No. 1. Its fierce and often brutal character sets the scene for the main concert’s war theme, and its romantic breadth corresponds with the final piece of the evening, the Mendelssohn Trio.
