The Big Night of the Guitar

featuring the Assad Brothers, the Final of London International Guitar Competition, and 2019 winner George Tarlton

Nature Unwrapped / London Guitar Festival

Main Concert, 7.30pm: the Assad Brothers

The highlight of this evening is an unmissable performance by one of the greatest guitar acts of all time: the Assad Brothers guitar duo from Brazil featuring Sergio and Odair Assad.

The Assad Brothers have set new performance standards in classical guitar with their astonishing technique, exceptional artistry and seamless ensemble. Because they famously play all their music from memory and because of the fact that they have played together since childhood, their performances – uniquely for classical guitar –  create the impression that they are improvising like virtuosic, even telepathic jazz musicians. They have made a major contribution to the creation of a new repertoire for two guitars – many composers including Astor Piazzolla, Terry Riley, Radamés Gnattali and Roland Dyens have written new works for them whilst Sergio Assad is a celebrated composer in his own right. The Assad Brothers also enjoy a number of longstanding collaborations with a number fantastic instrumentalist including cellist Yo-Yo Ma and clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera.

Concert, 6.30pm-7pm: George Tarlton – LIGC 2019 winner

A performance by British guitarist George Tarlton, the outstanding winner of the London International Guitar Competition 2019. The programme includes Laura Snowden’s The Strange World of Spiders (IGF Commission).

5pm-6.15pm: Final of the London International Guitar Competition (LIGC)

LIGC one of the most prestigious competitions worldwide which has attracted the best guitarists under 30 years of age who have come from 33 different countries. Tonight, three finalists will play 20 minutes each to compete for the coveted First Prize.

In the context of Kings Place’s Nature Unwrapped series, the set piece is a new IGF commission by Philip Cashian called Spoor which is a term in biology meaning ‘the marks left by a wild animal as it travels’.
